Independence In Dependence

One year ago, Mom left for the US. I was left to live with my two elder siblings -- "Komiks" and "Tsane." Then we began to journey on through the road of independence...

Since we were kids, we've been used to having help around the house. So when we were suddenly left with only our own hands and initiative for help, mmm...things went a bit chaotic. Hehe. We went from the carefree life to the tough life. We had to learn how to do our own laundry, cook for ourselves, wash the dishes, fix the house, clean the bathroom, pay the bills, and run errands! Not to mention, our schedules were also piled up with school stuffs. Nevertheless, I say with all gratitude to God for the strength and grace which were ever sufficient, it has all been a joy!

I testify to you that every seeming lack, every offense made, every pain inflicted, every sorrow felt, Jesus Christ has used all of them to mold me more and more into His character. I have learned that it takes sincerest gratitude to cover for the lack, agape love to overlook an offense, earnest prayer to be healed from the pain, and reverent worship to get rid of the sorrow.

As one goes down deeper into the ocean, the pressure gets more intense. Similarly, when we ask God to bring us deeper into His fullness, we have to be ready to adjust to a greater pressure. Maturity is costly. And it can only be gained with hard work. There are no shortcuts and only one road to take – we either give up and stop learning, or we press on and keep maturing until we become what God has called us to be. Even Jesus Himself learned obedience from the things which He suffered.*

When we go through the road of independence and encounter the difficult valleys, we’re likely to lose heart. But we have to constantly remind ourselves that the only way to overcome the road of independence is to acknowledge our weaknesses and fall down at the feet of Jesus in utter dependence.

I am thankful to God for seeing me through my first year of independence but am even more thrilled for the years ahead. :)

*Hebrews 5:8, “Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered…”
